    Events in State College, PA

Football, festivals, markets, and culture. What's happening in Happy Valley and when to plan around it.

By Matt Glick · Updated October 30, 2026

State College has two speeds: football weekends and everything else. On home game weekends crowds of 100,000+ arrive, restaurants have waits, hotels sell out and traffic slows to a crawl. The rest of the year, it's a college town with a steady calendar of arts, food and community events.

Arts Fest in mid-July is the second-biggest draw, with downtown streets closed to cars for several days. The downtown farmers market runs on Locust Lane in season, and First Friday brings gallery openings and music downtown. In between there are heritage festivals and whatever the State Theatre has booked.

This guide covers the events worth planning a trip around, the ones you can catch while you're here, and practical tips for each one — parking, timing, what to avoid. Need dining help? The restaurant guide has game-day strategy. Looking for things between events? See things to do.

    Event Planning Tips

    • Hotels: Book as early as you can for football, graduation and Arts Fest weekends; prices rise sharply and rooms sell out. Ordinary weekends are much easier. See where to stay.
    • Parking: Downtown garages serve most events. For football, Penn State sells single-game parking passes in advance (2026 prices started at $90) and general lots now use mobile passes; check gopsusports.com.
    • Dining: On any big event day, eat early or eat late. Counter-service spots move faster than sit-down restaurants. See the game day dining guide.
